Preventing Gun Violence

We are at a horrific moment in our country's history. Mass shootings, homicides, suicides and accidental deaths resulting from the astonishing number of guns in circulation, are exacting an awful toll on our society. As parents we can be the change we want to see in the world.

  • Cultivate a peaceful presence in the world. We can take a close look at all the ways we show up in the world through the lens of kindness and belonging. As Mother Teresa said, "If we have now peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other". Consider a daily practice like meditation, journaling, yoga or mindfulness that allows you to to do the inner work necessary to be an example of kindness and compassion for your children.

  • Limit the violent media that your children view. By some estimates, by the time many children enter middle school, they have watched up to 8,000 murders and more than 100,000 other acts of virtual violence through screens. HealthyChildren.org

  • Have a gun-free home. The safest number of guns in a home is zero. If you choose to have guns in your home, follow these important gun safety steps.
